Announcing Lab for iOS

It is been a while since I last posted here. I am happy to do so to announce our newest product, Lab. Lab is an app that I wanted. I found myself often wondering when and where this or that picture on my iPhone was taken. So, now, using Lab, you can get detailed information about the picture in your iOS device's photo library. That way, you don't need to transfer your photos to a computer to find out details about your own photo library. Sporting a gorgeous design, Lab is the perfect complement to your iOS device's photo album. Using Lab you can:

  • Find out the resolution and size of your photos.

  • Let Lab remind you when and where a picture was shot. The location, when available, will be displayed for you in a map.

  • Examine advanced info including histogram, exposure and shooting details, right in your device.

Lab 1.0 is available now for iOS 4 in the App Store. If you like to take photos, give it a try for just $0.99. We hope you like it.

Is Lab meant only for viewing photos in the Camera Roll? The descriptions in the email I received (via MacHeist) and in the app store say it's for photos in the "photo library," so I bought and installed it on my iPod touch (2nd generation, no camera). It's not clear to me how I can use it to view the Photo Library, or if that's even possible. All I see when I launch it is an empty screen labeled "Camera Roll" with no controls. There's no Lab entry in the iPod Settings app.

Am I missing something?

@St. Chris You are right. We have just uploaded an update to navigate through the whole photo library. We will update the description to explain it better. Thanks for the feedback!

Nice idea, this application, but it would be very useful if Lab could show XMP captions and titles. I have a lot of photos that are captioned but there's no way of seeing the captions on an iPad (or on an Apple TV for that matter!).

Many thanks,
Ray

this is nice, but as someone else said, Captions Titles Keywords. You are so close to photo management it would be like awesomesauce on cake to be able to search for a photo.

I love the UI, but it's a bit slow and there seem to be some performance issue while scrolling teh thumbnails.

Hmmm I hoped it would show me where all my pictures were taken on a big map, to make searching a bit easier. But it's just a massive list. Any plans for this?

Can you help me? When I launch it is asking to access my raw photos. How do I give Lab access?

@Sac - Lab needs Location Services to be enabled in order to be able to read metadata from the photo files; otherwise, the system does not allow it to access the files at all. Thus, you need to visit Settings > General > Location Services and ensure the entry for Lab is set to On.

Unfortunately this step is required even if Lab did not use the location information stored inside the photos. iOS does not offer a finer granularity yet: apps may access either all metadata, or none of it.

I d/l this app earlier. I cannot get it to work. 135 photos in my phone. Settings set to allow location services and all I can get is the "No Photos" screen. I even took a photo so that I would have one in my photo roll, stil nothing. Can you help?

@Larry Try opening the Photos App, then Lab. Sometimes the iPhone needs to reindex the photos, and so far, it can only be done by the Photos App.

All fixed. No problem. I turned phone off then back on. Thanks for your help.
