More iPhone Drawing Fun: Sketches 0.5 beta released

Sketches 0.5 beta has just been released, it should be available soon via Installer.app.

The biggest feature is support for multitouch drawing, making it possible to easily draw shapes such as ovals, rectangles, lines or arrows. Multitouch has been integrated with the "single-touch" mechanism in previous versions: you can use two fingers to create a shape, or just one to continue drawing free style, just like you were used to.

Sketches 0.5 is compatible with iPhone and iPod Touch devices running firmware versions 1.1.1 through 1.1.3, adapting to platform specificities automatically. The bug that caused only one photo to be exported to your photo album has been fixed, and sending sketches via email has been made a bit more user-friendly by providing visual progress indications.

More details about these new features and other improvements are available in these iPhone-ready release notes.

We hope you like this release!

I love Sketches.app! I downloaded the new revision (0.5) last night, promptly created a sketch, and then to my chagrin upon any subsequent re-opening of the app I only get to watch it hesitate and then crash. I have feverishly tried to solve this by uninstalling-then-reinstalling, uninstalling-restarting-then-reinstalling, resetting file permissions (within Sketches.app folder) to 0755, but alas, none of the above accomplishes anything.

Great work though, nonetheless; I love this app and cannot wait for it to be usable in the near future.

Hi John,

We have discovered a bug that affects Sketches 0.5 running on firmware 1.0.2. It has already been identified and solved, although the update will still take some time to be available via Installer.app.

It doesn't look like you are running 1.0.2, but the problem you have could be related to a similar compatibility problem. It'd be great if you could try the latest version, available here, and let us know if it works.

During our development tests, we have identified inconsistent permissions in some folders, possibly due to some glitches in the jailbreak process of firmware 1.1.3. Although Sketches 0.5 tries to detect these problems, we'd appreciate if you could check a few details for us. If you don't mind, I'd like to send the specifics to your email, then post the results here once we understand what's going on.

Thanks!

OK, great - I still have 1.0.2 on one of my phones and was mightily disappointed to watch the app hang and crash on launch. How long will the fix take to filter through?

@piers

The problem with 1.0.2 was detected and fixed a few hours after our release of version 0.5. We submitted an updated package to the
maintainers of the repository on Sunday night. We are still waiting for them to publish it. Unfortunately it is beyond our control.

I hope it won't take much more time for them to publish the update; however, if you are willing to get Sketches 0.5.2 immediately, there is a workaround you can use. Simply, add this source to Installer:

http://sketchesapp.com/repo

Once it has finished, click done, then hit Refresh. An update for Sketches 0.5 beta 2 will show up. Install it. It is possible that a new update for Sketches 0.5 shows up. Ignore it. Exit Installer, and enjoy Sketches.

Once you see the official Sketches 0.5 beta 2 update, you should remove the LateNiteSoft repository and install the official version.
That way, updates will be correctly reflected in the future.

Thanks a lot for your interest in Sketches!

Hello, I installed this on 1.1.2 iphone and my daugther loved it. Yesterday i upgraded my iphone to 1.1.3 via jailbreak, and now the app crashes whenever I try to open it. I tried to uninstall this, but the installer does not show this as an installed app!

Please help and thanks
